The untold story behind a price tag
Reasons to buy more consciously
There is an untold story behind every price tag. When you buy a product, you are responsible for the end of that story. Every story starts with Mother Nature or a person. Both deserve to be treated with love and respect!
The production process
When you buy a product you support the production process, whether if it is handmade or machine-made. Whether if it destroys or respect nature, Whether or not love is involved.
Many times when you buy something, you aren’t aware of the consequences your behavior might cause. You buy a product because (you think) you need it. Would your behavior still be the same if you knew that untold story behind the price tag?
When we give a presentation, we like to use a t-shirt as an example. Everyone bought a t-shirt once, right? The fashion industry is one of the most harmful industries in the world. A t-shirt is an easy example to explain how the industry works. If you have two exactly the same t-shirts, one cost $5 and the other $ 20. The shirts are both exactly the same, the only difference in the production process. Without any doubt, most people choose the cheapest one. Do you think it is possible to produce a product with respect for nature and human wellbeing on the other side of the world for just $5? Are the $15 extra not worth the investment in sustainable development of others?
The cheapest one
When you choose the cheapest one in this example. Even if you’re unaware it means that you support harmful practices. How can the need of buying something be more important than the wellbeing of others? Where is the love? As long as money is more important than the environment or human wellbeing the world will never change. Do we have the right to treat people on the other side of the world as slaves? This form of modern slavery is the driving force behind our lifestyles. Is that how we want to continue?
The story behind the label
What if every product is labeled with the name of the maker and the circumstances where they live and work in? Would that make any change? Unconsciously the modern slavery is supported. Is it fair that the lady who works 12 hours a day in an unsafe workplace needs to leave her house, or let her children work just to pay the rent? This woman who makes your beautiful clothing, doesn’t she deserve the same as you do?
When you start buying consciously, we can help the wealth of others worldwide growing. But we have to do it together. Businesses have to become more transparent about their practices. They know exactly where their products are made and by whom. Is it so difficult to communicate about it? If you really care about your customers and employees you want the best for them all, right?
Jewelry and fashion is an important aspect of non-verbal communication. We express our personality in the way we dress. This makes fashion and jewelry even more personal. Can you really feel beauty in items that are made by modern slavery?
You have the right to know to whom and where your money goes
When you buy something, especially a personal item, you have the right to know where your product is made, where your money goes and what the consequences are. In almost every country it is required to put a ‘made in’ label on the products. Most products are marked with ‘made in China’, instead of ‘made by Lee’. This makes it even less personal, right? Could you feel the bonding with Mr. Lee if his name would be on the label? Then you have the option if you want to give him your love when you are buying his product. How beautiful can it be if you know exactly who has made your product? And what your purchase will bring in the makers personal and professional lives?
Jewelry and clothing communicate who you really are. If you know the story behind the price tag, it supports the way how you communicate with others. Then you can proudly express yourself!
We are blessed that we have so many options. That we can choose what we buy and what we support. Many people in the world, don’t have this luxury. And even the small amount of money they own is spend responsibly. Because they know and feel the consequences.
Yes it is possible to realize this. You just have to care enough!
Please when you buy something next time, think about it! Support others who are really willing to make a positive change. Together we can make the world a better place!
